And hain't that a big enough majority in any town? -- Mark Twain, "Huckleberry Finn" ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 28-32 Page 2 8 Aug 2011 ================================================================= EDITORIAL ================================================================= Things are coming together for the new Fidonews. Richard Webb is beinning a new column in Fidonet History looking back 25 years to more current times. Janis, as usual, always has something for us. :) I've added a few things myself. Janis writes in with news of a new site for Fidonet and Fidonews. I'd written her a week ago asking about the fidonews.org domain, which Jim Barchuk is still managing. She's tried contacting him, but hasn't received a response yet. If anyone still keeps in contact with him, maybe y'all could help. At some point, I'd like to bring together several Fidonews resources under one roof on Fidonews.org. For instance, presently you can always be assured of your articles landing in the current editor's box by sending to editor@1:1/1 (or 222, 333, etc). I'd like to set it up so that sending to editor@fidonews.org also goes through. It'd also be nice to set up a BBS at that address just for Fidonews. You get the idea. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 28-32 Page 3 8 Aug 2011 ================================================================= ARTICLES ================================================================= * gentlemens' agreements Richard WEbb 1:116/901 First, let's dispense with any thought of political incorrectness. For those who might assume otherwise, this is shorthand for gentle ladies too. With that out of the way, we can get on with it. A decade or so ago an author penned a regular column in FIdonews that he called "first principles" which dealt with just that, first or overarching principles that make Fidonet work. I recall three of them in his series before he quit. If you were to read that series today you'd still find his discussion relevant, but there was one important aspect of the guiding principles of Fidonet he barely touched. We hear talk about what isn't defined in Fidonet policy, i.e. no coherent standard echomail policy ever developed, etc. The founders of fidonet, and those developing its operating policies showed some wisdom here in not setting down a policy for every occasion. Even though at times this makes for some interesting arguments, if you like that sort of thing that is. Before you formulate your argument telling me I'm wrong dear reader, please read on. The basic Fidonet transfer method was developed by an anarchist. That doesn't mean he was all about making bombs with container of gasoline and chucking them through windows. IT means that our founder was one who believed in maximum individual autonomy, and responsibility. WE all know that those two go hand in hand. Fidonet largely governs itself on the principle of gentlemens' agreements. IN those early days the rules were simple, have your mailer up during mail events to answer the phone, generate technically compliant mail bundles and messages, otherwise do what you like, run your system as you see fit. Don't like the style of the moderator in an echo? Start your own on the same topic, the best echo wins users and contributors. The other withers. Gentlemens' agreements are with us in all walks of life. IF you share a driveway with your neighbor chances are you've come to some sort of gentlemens' agreement. Ham radio operators work under many of them, i.e. don't transmit bandwidth hogging modes in the portion of a band where folks will be using narrow bandwidth modes and sensitive receivers to look for weak signals, etc. Gentlemens' agreements work best when they are understood by those they apply to. IN large organizations such as the ham radio or community they often take time to propagate to all the members. IN fidonet however, they were built into the guiding principles and policies. IN fact, it's these gentlemens' agreements that caused us FIDONEWS 28-32 Page 4 8 Aug 2011 to never go beyond policy 4.07 to 5.0, or develop worldwide echomail policy. During the '90's when the main fight in "fight-o- net" was about this or that policy those gentlemens' agreements meant that no policy would be conceived and ratified in haste. After all, what we have works. Anarcho-libertarian principles were hard at work in the Fidonet of those halcyon days, as they are today. IN other words, your freedom to swing your fist around ends at my nose. Badly formed policies on the rest of us, because those voting would look them over carefully, and unless they saw an improvement in the usual gentlemens' agreements they were given a prompt thumbs down. Still, gentlemens' agreements break down sometimes. When that happens it's our nature to complain loudly about how "there ought to be a law ... " or in our case a rule or policy dealing with the agreement that can't be enforced, because it isn't written down anywhere. IT's good to revisit these tacit agreements every now and then to see if they would actually benefit Fidonet by being codified in one policy or another. IT's a good idea as we do this to think long and hard before we vote yes to implementing the new rule or policy however. For most of a quarter of a century we've lived and worked under these agreements, and the proof of their viability is that we're still here. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 28-32 Page 5 8 Aug 2011 ================================================================= COLUMNS ================================================================= Cool Site of the Week by Gary Perkins Starting this week, I'd like to start a column dedicated to bringing you Internet sites you may not have heard of. Some will be useful, some funny, others just unique or weird. Some of the sites featured will be Fidonet or BBS related, others will not. At some point, I hope someone will offer to take this column on as a columnist! For the first issue of this column, I'd like to start with two seperate Internet sites. The first one most of you have heard of by now, but it's just *too cool* in my book to pass up an honorable mention. Slashdot.org was created by a geek named Rob Malda in September, 1997. It is primarily a place where noteworthy links are submitted with a short blurb describing them. Slashdot is mainly a collection of articles about other articles; nevertheless, its motto reads "News for nerds, stuff that matters." Most of the submitted articles that get published to its front page are news, technology, or generally science related. Geek stuff. Occasionally world-wide headlines will make it in as well. This is one of my personal favorites as nearly every day something is posted from which I can learn something. If it weren't for Slashdot, many of these things I'd never hear about. ---------------- Since I'm an avid trekker, I'd like to make mention of the Klingon Language Institute. For those who don't know, linguist Marc Okrand designed the language and added to it over the years. Several years ago it reached the point where it's officially recognized as a constructed language. It was deliberately designed to sound alien (and *feels* extremely alien, too). When I was a teenager, I bought the game Star Trek: Klingon. It included a full Klingon language learning suite, complete with videos of the Klingon Chancellor Gowron showing you how to pronounce the various words. While I did manage to learn a few phrases, I spent more time playing the game than learning the language. Today, the only word I've retained over the years is "'Qapla'" (Success, expression of triumph). At the Klingon Language Institute, you can learn how to write Klingon, hear how it sounds, and learn popular phrases. They have a discussion group, merchandise you can purchase, and you can read about some of the Shakespearean plays which have been adapted for Klingon. (In the television series, Klingons swear that many of Shakespeare's plays originated on their planet, and are best heard in the *original* Klingon) FIDONEWS 28-32 Page 6 8 Aug 2011 Some of my favorite phrases in English, with their *literal* English translations (mostly understandable if you have a good understanding of Klingon culture): That's great news! (The plates are full), Your mother has a smooth forehead (Extremely powerful insult), Hello (What do you want?). If you've never tried to pronounce Klingon, try this phrase: Happy birthday. (qoSlIj DatIvjaj) :) Check it out. Visit http://www.kli.org/. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 28-32 Page 7 8 Aug 2011 ================================================================= FIDONET HISTORY ================================================================= 25 years ago, FIdonews VOlume 3 issue 33. An article on a theme which would reappear regularly in the pages of FIdonews. That theme was the bad name bbs systems get from those who conduct illegal activity using them. In this case, the subject is a letter to the editor of INfoworld magazine. Allen MIller, the coordinator for the Cincinnati area net took issue with an article published in INfoworld stating that a bulletin board specializing in pirated software was part of Fidonet, and gave an explanation of what FIdonet is and does. the recurring theme of better positive publicity for FIdo was one of the major driving forces behind the creation of Ifna at the recent convention in Colorado SPrings, COlorado which took place that year. Back in those days the 5.25 floppy disk was the mainstay of the computer world. An article by MIke Guffy discusses getting good value for money spent when purchasing 5.25 inch floppies. 20 years ago, FIdonews 833 26 Aug 1991 TOm JEnnings the editor states he's putting out the issue a bit early so that he can be off to the FIdonet convention. David French, the Fidonews versions list compiler/editor solicited feedback from readers about how they'd like to see the version list presented, as it was growing rather large and unwieldy for publication in its entirety. Danny Mingle @ 1:116/9 had a suggestion on how to shrink the nodelist, a problem that is no longer with us. WAy back then the nodelist was growing quite rapidly as more folks discovered the new world of computer communications and the internet wasn't yet ubiquitous. COmplaints about nodelist bloat and proposed solutions would be a regular topic in FIdonews yet for another few years. 15 years ago in fidonews ... VOlume 13, issue 33, 12 August 1996 CHristopher Baker is settling in as editor, having been appointed to the position upon the disappearance of the previous editor who did not name a replacement. Highlights of Chris's editorial section from this issue were: "Zone 3 has a new Zone Coordinator in David Nugent but we still do not have an updated Zone 3 section in our Nodelist in Zone 1. Does Zone 3 show updated in Zones 2? 4? 5? 6?" NOTE: FIDONEWS Echo is now moving over the Planet Connect part of the Zone 1 Backbone. Everyone should be able to get a link to that Echo as soon as you read this." FIdonet via ftp was just starting to be used regularly in those days, which meant three different ways to get your mail, regular FIDONEWS 28-32 Page 8 8 Aug 2011 modem over telephone line, the PLanet connect satellite service, and ftp over the internet. Also in this issue, Damian Walker of 2:2502/666 continued his multipart series on creating netwide bulletins using various tools such as netmgr and fdint. SEe fidonews 1330 for the first part. NEw fidonet sysops, expand the reach of your bbs. Read his articles, and implement some of the suggestions. jim barchuk of 1:141/355 tells about FIdonews now in html format via his site, as well as his fidonews archives via http or ftp. 10 years ago in FIdonews ... Volume 18, Number 33 13 Aug 2001 Frank Vest the editor talks about using his FIdonet point over a lan to do his echomail. Janis pens an article on coming changes in the filebone which will soon be supplanted by the INternational Filegate project. There were also the usual humor selections, as well as a recipe, and an article describing the production process for FIdonews by the editor. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 28-32 Page 9 8 Aug 2011 ================================================================= QUESTION OF THE WEEK ================================================================= This week's question: Fidonet email addresses from Gary Perkins Being a rather new fidonetter myself and seeing many old and new users joining up, I'd like to start back up the Q&A section. For this week's topic, I'd like to ask the following question: Do the Fidonet Internet email addresses still work, and how do you use them? It would be easy enough to find out for myself, but it makes more sense to publish a knowledgable answer from someone for all new-ish users to read. This would be handy information to know if for some reason Internet in your region goes down, but you're still able to dial out over POTS to another Fidonet system. :) ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 28-32 Page 10 8 Aug 2011 ================================================================= NOTICES ================================================================= New Pages for Fidonet.ca and Fidonet.ca/fidonews by Janis Kracht, 1:261/38, janis@filegate.net New Pages have been installed at http://fidonet.ca/ and http://www.fidonet.ca/fidonews/ The Zone pages should be done soon for http://www.fidonews.ca/, so until then you should access that site with this url: http://www.fidonet.ca/fidonews/ Pay a visit to http://www.fidonet.ca/ if you'd like some information regarding the tools that we use in Fidonet. Eventually I plan to have a submission form available there as well so that one can upload a submission and have it sent directly to the Editor of Fidonews, Gary Perkins. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 28-32 Page 11 8 Aug 2011 ================================================================= FIDONET SOFTWARE LISTING ================================================================= BBS Software List Updated 29 July 2011 Maintained by Sean Dennis (1:18/200) Editors Emeritus: Robert Couture, Janis Kracht M=Mailer T=Tosser B=BBS D=Door C=Comm/Terminal P=Points E=Editor I=Internet U=Utility #=Info F=TIC/SRIF Processor *=Software is available and may be registerable, but no longer supported or updated. @=Website is operating but is no longer updated. ?=Software's updating/support status is unknown. It is passed to its readers electronically via the FidoNet and other computer networks and to non-network readers as well as to the InterNet. Fidonews welcomes articles, editorials, and features of interest to the Fidonet Community. To have your article included in Fidonews, simply send it via netmail to 1:1/1 or via internet email to gary.perkins@setxbbs.synchro.net. Here are some guidelines you can use to help me make it easier to format your article for Fidonews: 1. Use standard ASCII text. Most word processor formats can't be used by the Fidonews software. In addition, the Fidonews software won't accept most ASCII control characters nor any characters above ASCII 127 (this, unfortunately, includes all those neat box drawing characters). 2. Start your lines at the left of your screen when typing. The software puts in a left margin automatically, and I have to manually remove any left margin appearing in your document. 3. Keep your line length to under 70 columns for tables or charts (or if you include an ASCII illustration). Regular paragraphs exceeding this 70 column limit can be reformatted during the editing process, but tables and charts are normally distorted beyond recognition by a simple reformatting. 4. Separate paragraphs with a blank line. This is how my text editor recognizes paragraph endings, so I have to add blank lines manually if you don't. 5. Title your article as you'd like to see it in the Table of Contents. If you don't, I'll make up a title for you, but I'd rather have the article appear as you wish. 6. Include your name and node number (or internet address) under the title. I'll grab it from your message, if necessary... but, again, I'd rather have the article appear as you wish. 7. Check your own spelling and wording. Though I feel free to reformat your article so it conforms to technical requirements, I generally leave the wording (and spelling) alone as I don't want to distort what you have to say. 8. Send your article before Sunday in order to see it in that Monday's edition. Normally I put the newsletter together Sunday Evening and send it out... and I normally check email and netmail before I finalize the edition. So if I get your article before Sunday evening, I'll include it... but send it by Saturday to be FIDONEWS 28-32 Page 18 8 Aug 2011 safe :) 9. If you're not sure whether you should write or send in your article, I would encourage you to send it anyway. Chances are, if you write of something of interest to yourself, it'll be of interest to others. Besides, Fidonews is a better publication when it's written by a variety of people :) Gary Perkins Fidonews Editor ----------------------------------------------------------------- Credits, Legal Infomation, Availability + -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- FIDONEWS STAFF - -- -- -- -- -- -- -- + | | | Editor: Gary Perkins, 1:393/31, 1:1/1 | | Fidonet History Column: Richard Webb, 1:116/901 | | | + -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- + + -- -- -- -- -- -- -- - EDITORS EMERITI - -- -- -- -- -- -- -- + | | | Tom Jennings, Thom Henderson, Dale Lovell, Vince | | Perriello, Tim Pozar, Sylvia Maxwell, Donald Tees, | | Christopher Baker, Zorch Frezberg, Henk Wolsink, | | Doug Meyers, Warren D.
