I am willing to fight for peace. Nothing will end war unless the people themselves refuse to go to war. - Albert Einstein ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 28-34 Page 2 22 Aug 2011 ================================================================= EDITORIAL ================================================================= This week Andrew Leary writes in with an article on virtualizing your BBS. I've actually been working on this recently myself, and thought I'd share a few notes. Firstly, virtualization is great if you have a processor that's made for it. Unfortunately, both my computers are aged just a bit before that. My desktop machine is just powerful enough to play streaming videos for the kiddos, as well as hosting my VOIP. I used to keep the BBS on that machine, but there's always the one or two things I'd need to do at the console, and I hate to disturb them when they're watching their favorite show. I decided to virtualize and run the board under my Ubuntu on my Acer netbook. These netbooks are nifty machines for the price, but a little underpowered when it comes to something like virtualization. The Atom processor included on these was not designed for that, and so all virtualization is done in software. I decided to start low. I run Synchronet BBS, which is a Win32 BBS platform, so I started with Windows 98 in VirtualBox OSE. Win98 run rather sluggishly, probably because it's built on Microsoft's DOS. I didn't spend much time on it due to how unresponsive it was. I thought about installing XP, but that seemed a bit overkill for the moment, and went with Windows 2000 Professional. The install and initial customization went great, as well as the initial run of the board. Problems started coming when the VM was running for a while. Win32 apps continued to function decently, but MSDOS and Win32 console apps would slow to a crawl. I figure this was probably some kind of bug in VirtualBox, and it got bad enough that I decided to scrap it and start with something new. I decided to try setting up with QEMU, but ran into problems with the launcher that is included with it in Ubuntu. Then, when trying to use the qemu-ctl control panel, that didn't want to work right either. Finally, I played around with running QEMU manually. In the end, I decided this was just too much work for something that these days should "just work". In the end, I decided to reinstall Windows XP directly on my netbook. I like running Linux, but until I get a more powerful machine to be able to virtualize Windows well, I'm stuck running Windows. VirtualBox just does not handle 16bit apps well enough on its own; perhaps someone with a processor designed for VM's could comment on whether those apps run better on them. If you're running Linux and are thinking of using VirtualBox for only one or two apps, I would suggest trying dosbox, dosemu, or wine depending on your need. Dosemu and wine ran great for some of my needs; my problem was simply the multitude of non-Linux apps I'm using, with no time for learning something new at the moment. FIDONEWS 28-34 Page 3 22 Aug 2011 I hope this helps for those who may have older hardware like me! Gary Perkins ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 28-34 Page 4 22 Aug 2011 ================================================================= ARTICLES ================================================================= Virtualizing your BBS BY Kurt Weiske, 1:218/900, sysop@realitycheckBBS.org I've been a sysop since 1991. Most of the time, the BBS sat on a dedicated system obtained through creative means - usually cast-offs from work, friends or family, I don't think I ever *paid* for a BBS system. The current system is a 1.1 ghz celeron desktop PC circa 2000; underpowered by today's standards but fine for a dedicated BBS system. Nowadays, my BBS box sits idle most of the time; I hub for a few systems and run a shoutcast station on mine. I started running into networking problems with the system, and tried moving it onto a virtual machine on my primary desktop. I'll never look back from virtualizing the BBS. I run windows, but most of these tips carry over to other Vm environments as well. 1. Your desktop has more power than you need. I'm virtualizing my BBS in an XP VM running under VMWare Player. The host system isn't anything special - a 2.8 ghz single core Pentium with 3 gigabytes of RAM running Windows XP. The BBS runs as smoothly as it did on dedicated hardware. 2. Simpler is better. Virtualizing my BBS means one less power supply to fail, one less hard drive to fry, one less 10 year-old motherboard to fail. 3. Smaller is better, too! I found smaller equivalents of many of the programs I removed. Look at portableapps.com and tinyapps.org for ideas. Many of them install without registry entries, making installation/removal simple. 4. VM technology is (mostly) free. VMWare Player, VirtualBox GPL and others are free for non-commercial use. They're a bit feature-limited compared to paid versions but are perfectly fine for BBS applications. 5. Backups are a breeze! Want to back up your BBS? Go into the VM and copy the BBS files to your host machine. Some VM servers support drag-and-drop between the guest and the host! Or, shut down the VM, zip up the VM image files and you've got a complete snapshot of your BBS. 6. Strip down your guest OS. FIDONEWS 28-34 Page 5 22 Aug 2011 I used nLite to remove everything I didn't need/want in a guest OS. I'm down to 24 processed and 173 megabytes of memory used - including the BBS and a mailer. I had to put back some command line utilities when I wanted to do some text manipulation. 7. BBSes are fun to play with. VMs make it easier to tweak them. Before VMs, the BBS ran in my garage with a cruddy keyboard and mouse, dim monitor and a desk with no space for a mouse. Now, the VM runs in my big monitor, with my familiar mouse/keyboard/speakers and comfy chair. No more huddling over a folding table sitting on a milk crate for me, or waiting for remote desktop to catch up! I've done a lot more tweaking now that it's more comfortable to do so. Eventually, I may move to a VPS to consolidate the BBS with my web site, but for now, virtualizing my BBS has given me something new to play with, simplified my network and is cutting down my utility bill. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 28-34 Page 6 22 Aug 2011 ================================================================= COLUMNS ================================================================= August Applications to Join or Rejoin Fidonet ============================================ Collected from http://www.filegate.net/zone1/ By Janis Kracht, 1:261/38, janis@filegate.net Returning SysOps: Region 11: Nicholasl Loch Vincennes, IN Region 17: Stephen Proffitt McMinnville, OR Welcome Back! I'm sure you've been there. Someone asks you a question, and you immediately start running with the topic, not thinking that what you are thinking and what your 'audience' is thinking may be different. Such was the case with my article on using a service like zoneedit.com to establish one's "zone pages" with an internet domain. A "zone" that is related to one's domain, has nothing to do with a "Zone" as in Fidonet :) Just to make some things clear, I'll explain a bit more about what domain Zone is all about. On the internet, a domain name is a single entry, like "www.filegate.net" or just some "domain.com". A "Zone" is a collection of one or more domain names, all having the same ending. For example, "filegate.net" is an internet zone that contains "filegate.net", "www.filegate.net", and "mail.filegate.net". It is with a service like zoneedit.com that you can create these parts of your Zone. A company like Zoneedit is a servive that stores the DNS records for a domain name, address (A) records, name server (NS) records, and mail exchanger (MX) records The Internet maintains two principal "namespaces", the domain name hierarchy and the Internet Protocol (IP) address system. The Domain Name System maintains the domain-namespace and provides translation services between these two namespaces. Zoneedit is a service that lets you enter your domain, and ip address and then assigns you a domain name server address, such as I have: whois filegate.net_ [...] Registrant: IFDC FileGate Project 121 Main Street Windsor, NY 13865 US Domain Name: FILEGATE.NET Domain servers in listed order: NS17.ZONEEDIT.COM NS13.ZONEEDIT.COM FIDONEWS 28-34 Page 8 22 Aug 2011 [...] Then when someone decides to visit to my web page, or to send me an email, the location of my system is known by the records I have entered at zoneedit. Now sometimes the company you purchase your domain from may take care of all of this for you.. Network Solutions, the company where I purchased filegate.net from so many years ago, does not. They simply sell you the domain-name space. I had to set up the zone pages myself via zonedit for filegate.net to link my IP address, domain-name-space, my domain server and MX records. I hope this makes things a bit clearer, and sorry for any misunderstandings I may have caused! :) ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 28-34 Page 9 22 Aug 2011 ================================================================= FIDONET SOFTWARE LISTING ================================================================= BBS Software List Updated 29 July 2011 Maintained by Andrew Leary (1:320/119) Editors Emeritus: Robert Couture, Janis Kracht, Sean Dennis M=Mailer T=Tosser B=BBS D=Door C=Comm/Terminal P=Points E=Editor I=Internet U=Utility #=Info F=TIC/SRIF Processor *=Software is available and may be registerable, but no longer supported or updated. @=Website is operating but is no longer updated. ?=Software's updating/support status is unknown. It is passed to its readers electronically via the FidoNet and other computer networks and to non-network readers as well as to the InterNet. Fidonews welcomes articles, editorials, and features of interest to the Fidonet Community. To have your article included in Fidonews, simply send it via netmail to 1:1/1 or via internet email to gary.perkins@setxbbs.synchro.net. Here are some guidelines you can use to help me make it easier to format your article for Fidonews: 1. Use standard ASCII text. Most word processor formats can't be used by the Fidonews software. In addition, the Fidonews software won't accept most ASCII control characters nor any characters above ASCII 127 (this, unfortunately, includes all those neat box drawing characters). 2. Start your lines at the left of your screen when typing. The software puts in a left margin automatically, and I have to manually remove any left margin appearing in your document. 3. Keep your line length to under 70 columns for tables or charts (or if you include an ASCII illustration). Regular paragraphs exceeding this 70 column limit can be reformatted during the editing process, but tables and charts are normally distorted beyond recognition by a simple reformatting. 4. Separate paragraphs with a blank line. This is how my text editor recognizes paragraph endings, so I have to add blank lines manually if you don't. 5. Title your article as you'd like to see it in the Table of Contents. If you don't, I'll make up a title for you, but I'd rather have the article appear as you wish. 6. Include your name and node number (or internet address) under the title. I'll grab it from your message, if necessary... but, again, I'd rather have the article appear as you wish. 7. Check your own spelling and wording. Though I feel free to reformat your article so it conforms to technical requirements, I generally leave the wording (and spelling) alone as I don't want to distort what you have to say. 8. Send your article before Sunday in order to see it in that Monday's edition. Normally I put the newsletter together Sunday Evening and send it out... and I normally check email and netmail before I finalize the edition. So if I get your article before Sunday evening, I'll include it... but send it by Saturday to be FIDONEWS 28-34 Page 16 22 Aug 2011 safe :) 9. If you're not sure whether you should write or send in your article, I would encourage you to send it anyway. Chances are, if you write of something of interest to yourself, it'll be of interest to others. Besides, Fidonews is a better publication when it's written by a variety of people :) Gary Perkins Fidonews Editor ----------------------------------------------------------------- Credits, Legal Infomation, Availability + -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- FIDONEWS STAFF - -- -- -- -- -- -- -- + | | | Editor: Gary Perkins, 1:393/31, 1:1/1 | | Fidonet History Column: Richard Webb, 1:116/901 | | | + -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- + + -- -- -- -- -- -- -- - EDITORS EMERITI - -- -- -- -- -- -- -- + | | | Tom Jennings, Thom Henderson, Dale Lovell, Vince | | Perriello, Tim Pozar, Sylvia Maxwell, Donald Tees, | | Christopher Baker, Zorch Frezberg, Henk Wolsink, | | Doug Meyers, Warren D.
