When you sit on a red-hot cinder a second seems like an hour. That's relativity. --- Albert Einstein ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 28-36 Page 2 5 Sep 2011 ================================================================= EDITORIAL ================================================================= For the past couple months, we've been having record highs almost consistently here in Southeast Texas. Temperatures, which are normally 95-98 this time of year, have been going several degrees over 100 almost every single day. When we would finally get some rain, it would be a quick moving shower lasting all of ten or fifteen minutes. Well, thanks to Tropical Storm Lee, we've *finally* had some cooler air pulled down along with a decent amount of rain. The ground had, in some places, cracks big enough for my foot to fall into. I haven't looked yet, but hopefully those cracks have started sealing up. I believe we've gotten around two inches of rain here. Even at the rain's heaviest, the ground was so dry there was no puddling! It was fascinating to watch the downpour and see all that get sucked up all at once. I've had my windows closed up and the air conditioner running for months. As I sit and type this, it's a very refreshing 72 degrees outside, and I plan on taking the kids to the park and getting some much needed exercise. I *pray* that we're done with the triple digits for this year! Now on to Fidonews. Janis writes in with more details on her newuser script attack. And, Richard sends us an article discussing amateur radio resources on Fidonet. In the echo, it's been brought to my attention that at least a couple systems have not been seeing the robot postings. Hopefully this is just a glitch on an uplink, but if you have not been receiving the Fidonews in the echo, please speak up and also discuss it with your feed provider. In the meantime, Fidonews is available via fidonews.ca. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 28-36 Page 3 5 Sep 2011 ================================================================= ARTICLES ================================================================= FIDONET HAM RADIO SERVICES THe following fidonet conferences may be of interest to amateur radio enthusiasts: ham general amateur radio topics ham_tech amateur radio technical discussions amateur_radio amateur radio topics only. ls_arrl bulletins of interest to amateur radio enthusiasts from ARRL and other sources. emergcom Emergency and disaster communications using all adio communications services and modes. Tossing out usernames one after the other, this script attempted to tie up all my tcpip nodes. As I noticed the eh jerk attempting this, I have to admit I had a little fun with it, though I'm sure no one was watching hehe.. First I changed "his" screen size to 4 lines.. then I helpfully turned on RIP graphics for his tty type.. That slowed the script down a bit Lol. I knew I couldn't sit there playing with this for a long time, but it felt kind of good... a kind of vengence one may not have the opportunity of taking when someone 'attacks' your system After watching his ip address change a few times, I entered a password for new users on the BBS. Now, new users cannot log in period, unless they contact me first at FIDONEWS 28-36 Page 6 5 Sep 2011 janis@filegate.net to request the BBS new user password. At first it was for a scanner I owned; then later to see what frequencies might be getting relayed over the net for listening. The other day I got bored and went off on my search, and found a really cool radio site. Apparently it's powered by a software called WebSDR which actually allows you to tune the band from your computer at home. I don't know much about the software itself and how it works, but on this particular site it allows you access to 20 meter and 40 meter bands. You can tune a decent range, raise and lower the amount of bandwidth, and set it for upper sideband or lower sideband. I've had a lot of fun with this over the past week, and I'd love to hear of any related sites y'all may have run into. I can say I did find one other out there which was set up for listening to very low frequencies. Anyways, URL is below, have fun! http://outside.wallawalla.edu:8901/ ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 28-36 Page 8 5 Sep 2011 ================================================================= FIDONET SOFTWARE LISTING ================================================================= BBS Software List Updated 29 July 2011 Maintained by Andrew Leary (1:320/119) Editors Emeritus: Robert Couture, Janis Kracht, Sean Dennis M=Mailer T=Tosser B=BBS D=Door C=Comm/Terminal P=Points E=Editor I=Internet U=Utility #=Info F=TIC/SRIF Processor *=Software is available and may be registerable, but no longer supported or updated. @=Website is operating but is no longer updated. ?=Software's updating/support status is unknown. It is passed to its readers electronically via the FidoNet and other computer networks and to non-network readers as well as to the InterNet. Fidonews welcomes articles, editorials, and features of interest to the Fidonet Community. To have your article included in Fidonews, simply send it via netmail to 1:1/1 or via internet email to gary.perkins@setxbbs.synchro.net. Here are some guidelines you can use to help me make it easier to format your article for Fidonews: 1. Use standard ASCII text. Most word processor formats can't be used by the Fidonews software. In addition, the Fidonews software won't accept most ASCII control characters nor any characters above ASCII 127 (this, unfortunately, includes all those neat box drawing characters). 2. Start your lines at the left of your screen when typing. The software puts in a left margin automatically, and I have to manually remove any left margin appearing in your document. 3. Keep your line length to under 70 columns for tables or charts (or if you include an ASCII illustration). Regular paragraphs exceeding this 70 column limit can be reformatted during the editing process, but tables and charts are normally distorted beyond recognition by a simple reformatting. 4. Separate paragraphs with a blank line. This is how my text editor recognizes paragraph endings, so I have to add blank lines manually if you don't. 5. Title your article as you'd like to see it in the Table of Contents. If you don't, I'll make up a title for you, but I'd rather have the article appear as you wish. 6. Include your name and node number (or internet address) under the title. I'll grab it from your message, if necessary... but, again, I'd rather have the article appear as you wish. 7. Check your own spelling and wording. Though I feel free to reformat your article so it conforms to technical requirements, I generally leave the wording (and spelling) alone as I don't want to distort what you have to say. 8. Send your article before Sunday in order to see it in that Monday's edition. Normally I put the newsletter together Sunday Evening and send it out... and I normally check email and netmail before I finalize the edition. So if I get your article before Sunday evening, I'll include it... but send it by Saturday to be FIDONEWS 28-36 Page 15 5 Sep 2011 safe :) 9. If you're not sure whether you should write or send in your article, I would encourage you to send it anyway. Chances are, if you write of something of interest to yourself, it'll be of interest to others. Besides, Fidonews is a better publication when it's written by a variety of people :) 10. If your article contains LONG URLs (URLs longer than 70 columns), please use a URL shortening service, such as TinyURL. Even better, use one for any URL longer than even half that.
