Power is what all messiahs really seek; not the chance to serve. This is true even of the pious brethren who carry the gospel to foreign parts. -- H. L. Mencken ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 30-05 Page 2 4 Feb 2013 ================================================================= GENERAL ARTICLES ================================================================= Nodelisting in dual zones Ward Dossche 2:292/854 With the advent of the internet the desire to have nodes listed in multiple zones has increased. The ZCs have always tried to stay away from it as it might be the opening of a can of very live worms. Some time ago however a Canadian sysop with Greek ancestry by the name of Dimitri Papadopoulas requested such a Z2-nodenumber. He runs a pretty successful Greek-themed BBS-operation from the Montreal-area which extends into zone-2. To make it more appealing for people from Greece to participate, he asks for this entry. Z1C and Z2C discussed this to reach a unified response. After carefull consideration and without neither Z3C or Z4C objecting, we decided to grant the request of Dimitri Papadopoulos. The concerned ZC/RC/NC in both zones all share the same ideas. It is at the same time hoped that this dual listing will encourage the rebuilding of some Zone-2 areas. Dimitri will enter the segment of Zone-2 soon as part of Region-56 and a new yet to-be-created net-411 for Greece. The ZCs wish to stress that this is not to trigger a general trend but a single well argumented case that got approved. Take care, Ward Dossche (and Janis Kracht) ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 30-05 Page 3 4 Feb 2013 ================================================================= WARD'S WONDERING WAYS ================================================================= Ward's Wondering Ways By Ward Dossche 2:292/854 In July 1969 man walked for the first time on the moon, First the recently deceased Neil Armstrong, followed moments later by Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin. Everybody even today knows Armstrong's landmark "One small step for man; one giant leap for mankind" statement. It was followed by several remarks, the usual COM traffic between him, the other astronauts, on the mission and Mission Control. Before he re-entered the lander, he allegedly made the enigmatic remark "Good luck, Mr. Gorsky." For years people have questioned what it meant and Armstrong never commented upon it. However, 26 years after the moonwalk he did. Apparently mr.Gorsky had passed away and Armstrong felt free to speak now. Armstrong and his brother, so the tale goes, were playing baseball in the backyard. His brother hit a ball which landed in front of the Gorsky's, their neighbors, bedroom window. As young Armstrong leaned down to pick up the ball, he heard Mrs.Gorsky shouting at Mr. Gorsky, "Oral sex? Oral sex you want? You'll get oral sex when the kid next door walks on the moon!" So during the summer of 2004 I was in Seward Alaska and on a particular date visiting the SeaLife Center there which had been established with oil compensation money after the "Exxon Valdez" disaster. It so happened that Aldrin was visiting that day and there was a handful of tickets for people to attend a presentation by the once moonwalker from 34 years before. It was pretty interesting. For example, the man was very short but that never really shows from pictures, however these astronauts had to be short, if you ever have seen an Apollo spaceship in the National Air & Space Museum on the Mall in Washington DC, you'd realise how cramped it was. After his presentation there were some minutes for Q&A so I tried my luck and asked clarification about the Gorsky-statement. Aldrin had to laugh and explained it was one of the best space-jokes ever but that none of it was true. It was a hoax which started in about 1995, he explained which could only have a life due to the internet, the speed of dispersal of FIDONEWS 30-05 Page 4 4 Feb 2013 "news" and the impossibility of stopping a hoax such as that to reproduce itself. "Next Question!" So there was this very fat lady asking "When you were outthere on the surface of the Moon, did you have some kind of a divine moment inspired by a higher being?" Aldrin looked at the woman, smiled and said ... "Lady, we went there for all mankind, not just for Presbytareans" ... and "that" is a true quote. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 30-05 Page 5 4 Feb 2013 ================================================================= JAMNNTPD SERVERS LIST ================================================================= The Johan Billing JamNNTPd project This is a list of known JamNNTPd servers working. They are essentially the modern version of Bulletin Board Systems. You connect to them using the email client of your choice and you don't need any other software installed on your computer -- regardless of operating system -- but that favourite mail client of yours. Even smart phones can handle this, giving you the opportunity to get your daily doses of fidonet on the bus, tram or train on the way to your job, school or whatever. If you could type it on your keyboard, it's probably quite OK. No line may be longer than 70 characters. b) Put a title to the article. Put the title in two times. The first time, on the first line, with an * before it. The second time, on the second line, without the * and centered. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index, the second line will become the headline. On the third line, put your name and FidoNet address, present or former. If former, you may want to add some other address where you can be reached for personal comments. c) Deadline for article submission is Sunday, 22:00 UTC. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. Please help by putting the file extension of the correct subject on the file name if known. Ideas for Subject areas: Subject File | Subject File ----------------------------------|---------------------------------- From the *C's *.css | Rebuttals to articles *.reb Fidonet Regional News *.reg | Fidonet Net News *.net Retractions *.rtx | General Fidonet Articles *.art Guest Editorial *.gue | Fidonet Current Events *.cur Fidonet Interviews *.inv | Fidonet Software Reviews *.rev Fidonet Web Page Reviews *.web | Fidonet Notices *.not Getting Fidonet Technical *.ftc | Question Of The Week *.que Humor in a Fido Vein *.hfv | Comix in ASCII *.cmx Fidonet's Int. Put a .TXT on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews. If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I can not fix and I need your help on it.
